2.4 GHz is not Bluetooth
A wireless gaming mouse ships with a dedicated 2.4 GHz dongle running a proprietary protocol tuned for low latency and frequency hopping around interference. Measured end-to-end delay is typically within a fraction of a millisecond of a wired connection.
Bluetooth uses a different, power-optimised stack with much higher and less consistent latency. It is convenient for a laptop bag; it is not a competitive input path.
Cable drag is a real cost
Even a soft paracord cable applies variable resistance that changes as your hand moves across the pad. Your brain compensates, but that compensation is inconsistent, especially on long low-sensitivity swipes.
Removing the cable makes flick distance more repeatable. Most players who switch report the difference in consistency more than in raw speed.
Battery, weight and polling
Wireless adds a battery, which historically meant weight. Modern ultralight designs land under 60 g including the cell, so the penalty is largely gone.
Battery life scales inversely with polling rate: expect several times more hours at 1000 Hz than at 4000 Hz. Charging over USB-C while playing turns the mouse into a wired one when you forget.
When wired is still the right call
Budget. At the same price, a wired mouse can afford a better sensor, better switches and a better shell, because there is no radio or battery in the bill of materials.
Also consider environments with heavy 2.4 GHz congestion — crowded LAN events — although modern dongles handle this well when placed on the desk rather than behind the PC.
